Speaker: Luke Dolan, Master Energy Advisor Capital Home Energy Inc.

This technical session provides builders, trades, and energy professionals with a focused, real-world look at how dual-fuel combi systems can support Step Code 4 and Net Zero Ready performance in cold-climate homes.

Using the CHBA Central Interior Training House as a live case study, instructor Luke Dolan will walk participants through system design, installation considerations, and the energy-efficiency strategies that allowed the home to achieve Step Code 4 and Net Zero Ready metrics.

The session explains how dual-fuel combi systems integrate space heating and domestic hot water delivery, how they interact with envelope performance, and why they offer a resilient and cost-effective pathway for high-performance homes. Participants will also learn about the FortisBC Dual-Fuel Combi rebate of up to $15,000, eligibility requirements, and how proper system sizing, commissioning, and documentation support rebate applications.

Practical takeaways include mechanical design considerations for upper-step homes, simple sequencing and installation practices to reduce callbacks, and performance checkpoints builders and trades can apply immediately in the field.

This equips attendees with a clear understanding of how mechanical systems can be optimized to meet Step Code targets and enhance overall building performance.
